Gov. Phil Bryant wants free community college in the state budget

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant is trying once more to get community college scholarship funding in the state budget, specifically $7 million to allow students to attend for free.
Though it’s unclear how many students would benefit, Bryant says it could “position Mississippi for long-term growth and sustainability” by equipping students with the skills they need to get good-paying jobs and pursue “meaningful careers.”
Bryant introduced the Mississippi Works Scholars program Wednesday, along with his other budget recommendations for the 2019 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
