A Hernando man grabbing a meal at a fast-food restaurant this week was startled when he saw a cat “the same size as a medium-to-large dog” walking across the street.

“I can assure you this is not a house cat,” David Sluder posted on Facebook.

Big-cat sightings are nothing new in Mississippi, though wildlife experts say they’ve been mostly absent from the state for a century due to hunting and habitat changes.
