The NAACP is the latest to speak up regarding President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Jackson, Mississippi, this weekend for the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
NAACP President Derrick Johnson says Trump’s attendance would be “an affront to the veterans of the civil rights movement.” 
“He has created a commission to reinforce voter suppression, refused to denounce white supremacists, and overall, has created a racially hostile climate in this nation,” Johnson said in a statement as reported by the Washington Post.
 
The NAACP’s statement comes a day after Mississippi’s county Democratic association also condemned Trump’s planned appearance at the museum’s opening. Rumors of planned protests are also in the mix, which White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders calls “very sad.”
“I think this is something that should bring the country together to celebrate the opening of this museum and highlighting [the] civil rights movement and the progress that we’ve made,” she said, according to WaPo. “And I would hope that those individuals would join in that celebration instead of protesting it.”
 
The Mississippi Democratic Party released a short statement Tuesday, urging people to look past politics in order to celebrate the museum’s opening.
“As the state prepares for the historic openings of the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum we must all realize some things are more important than politics and this moment is one of them,” the statement reads. “We expect many dignitaries to be in attendance.  Should the President confirm his visit, we will provide a response if and when that occurs.”
The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and Museum of Mississippi History open Saturday, Dec. 9, in honor of Mississippi’s bicentennial celebration.
