Mississippi will get $31.7 million as its 2018 share of federal royalties from Gulf of Mexico offshore oil and natural gas drilling.

The U.S. Department of the Interior on Thursday announced the latest Gulf of Mexico Energy and Security Act award.

The 2006 act distributes a share of federal royalties collected from offshore drilling in to Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. The funding announced this week amounts to nearly $215 million across the four states.

Mississippi will get $4 million more than in the 2017 budget year. State government will get $25.3 million, while Jackson County will get $2.7 million, Harrison County will get $2.5 million, and Hancock County will get $1.2 million.

The money is meant to restore or conserve coastal areas and marine resources or protect from hurricanes.
