Mississippi’s COVID-19 coronavirus cases and deaths climbed Sunday, and the statistics showed by good and bad news.
State health officials reported 109 new cases, bring the total number of infections confirmed to be 7,550. Sunday’s report was the lowest number of new cases reported in a single day in more than three weeks.
The state reported 12 more people died in the state due to the virus, bringing the state’s total number of deaths to 303. Sunday’s death total is slightly above the prior 7-day average number of deaths reported.
The state reported that 123 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or 40 percent of all deaths in the state.
The more troublesome news was that the hospitalization rates topped a new all-time high.
On Sunday the state reported 458 confirmed coronavirus cases were hospitalized. That was a jump of 34 patients since yesterday’s report or 8 percent.
Another 209 suspected (but not yet confirmed by test) cases were also hospitalized, the state reported.
The state said 143 patients were in ICU beds and 73 required mechanical ventilation. Both statistics were slightly higher than the prior day.
