Mississippi marks third-deadliest single day from coronavirus cases

New cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Mississippi rose Tuesday back to a rate above the trailing 7- and 14-day averages and the state reported the third single deadliest day since the pandemic began in March.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 272 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 11,704.
The state announced Tuesday morning 27 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 554. It was the third-highest, single-day death toll on record. The first and second highest days were a tie at 32 deaths reported on May 5 and May 6.
Mississippi’s 14-day average of daily new cases dropped slightly to 250 with Tuesday’s updated statistics. The 7-day average of new cases rose slightly to 257.
The state reported that 271 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 49 percent of all deaths in the state.
