Mississippi reported a near-record number of new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus Friday.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 402 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 12,624.

The state announced Friday morning 16 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 596. Three of the deaths reported in Friday’s update actually occurred earlier, but were delayed in reporting.

Mississippi’s 14-day average of daily new cases dropped slightly to 252 cases per day with Friday’s updated statistics. The 7-day average of new cases increased to 260 per day.

The state reported that 300 deaths were of residents of long-term care facilities or approximately 50 percent of all deaths in the state.
