Mississippi reported a lower-than-average number of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases Saturday as the state begins the Labor Day weekend.

On Saturday, the state reported 539 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.

The state also reported 11 more deaths Saturday from the prior day.

Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs warned Mississippians to “please be safe this Labor Day weekend” as he shared an article on social media that suggests wearing a mask should lessen symptoms even if someone is exposed and ultimately contracts the virus while wearing a mask.

Dobbs said last week that if the majority of Mississippians would wear masks, avoid groups and socially distance, the state should be able to avoid the spikes in coronavirus cases that occurred after the Memorial Day and Fourth of July holidays.

In total, 86,478 cases have been found in the state since March. The state believes approximately 68,000 of those cases have recovered.

A total of 2,569 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.

The 7-day, daily average of new cases dropped to 636 with Saturday’s update.

The 14-day, daily average dropped to 658  cases per day.
