Although people across Mississippi have had plenty of time with Mississippi Skies weather forecasts to prepare, there may be reason to travel during wintry precipitation.

Some people won’t be able to take off work while others may be caregivers or in emergency situations. Regardless of why people travel, there are some steps to remember before getting into the vehicle.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation offers the following tips:

• Check your car battery or charging system for optimum performance
• Clean, flush & put new antifreeze in your cooling system
• Check your brakes
• Make sure the heater, defroster & windshield wipers work
• Check your tire pressure
• See that your inside lights and headlights are working properly
• Ensure your exhaust system has no leaks. Carbon monoxide can accumulate quickly in closed vehicles!
