A Mississippi man faces felony charges for allegedly having a gun as a convicted felon and cocaine reportedly being found at his home.

On Feb. 26, a Lafayette County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to a house on County Road 171 to take a report of a disturbance. The alleged victim told the deputy that a man, identified as Joey Wells, pulled a gun on them.

The next day, investigators followed up on the report and found Wells was a convicted felon. He was charged with possession of a weapon by a felon and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Feb. 28, investigators were notified by the Oxford Police Department of a residence on Jackson Avenue where Wells was living.

Deputies conducted surveillance and saw Wells leaving the residence in his vehicle. Deputies made a traffic stop on the vehicle in front of James Food Center. Wells, 49, of Oxford, was arrested and transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center.

Investigators then obtained a search warrant for the residence on East Jackson Avenue. The sheriff’s department and the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit executed the search warrant.

During the search, an investigator found a firearm along with a bag of a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine.

Metro Narcotics charged Wells with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. A Justice Court judge issued Wells a $50,000 bond; however, it was revoked due to Wells being out of jail on another felony bond for animal cruelty.

Wells is currently being held at the detention center.
