A refrigerated watermelon truck fully engulfed in flames had firefighters from two Mississippi agencies busy Tuesday night.

Shortly after 11 p.m., the Wiggins Fire Department and Stone County Fire Service responded to a vehicle fire that saw a 53-foot refrigerated van trailer, packed with watermelons, fully engulfed in flames.

Emergency units were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters battled the fire for over an hour, ultimately bringing the blaze under control. The fire necessitated the use of heavy equipment, enabling personnel to sift through the charred remnants of the trailer to completely extinguish the fire.

Despite the intensity of the blaze, crews remained at the scene until approximately 4 a.m., ensuring the highway was cleared and safe for traffic. Thanks to the swift actions of the truck driver, who managed to disconnect the truck from the burning trailer, the truck itself was spared from damage. Remarkably, no injuries were reported during the incident.

The Wiggins Fire Department extended their gratitude to all agencies involved in the emergency response, highlighting the collaborative effort that made the operation a success. Special thanks were given to the Stone County Fire Service, Mississippi Department of Transportation, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Stone County Sheriff’s Department, and Wiggins Police Department for their invaluable assistance.

“The support from our community and multiple agencies was crucial in handling the situation,” said a spokesperson for the Wiggins Fire Department. “Our community is simply the best!”
