A Mississippi mother originally charged with child abuse now faces capital murder charges in the death of her 5-month-old child.

Summer Rose Hill, 20, of Biloxi, now faces a capital murder charge after an autopsy revealed her 5-month-old died from blunt force trauma, police announced Thursday.

Initially charged with child abuse, Hill’s charges were upgraded following the autopsy findings.

Her partner, Takavian Keivon Gibbs, 21, remains charged with one count of child abuse, but his charges have not been upgraded.

The couple was arrested last week after bringing the deceased infant to Merit Health Hospital, where staff noted multiple injuries consistent with abuse.

The autopsy, performed Tuesday, confirmed the infant’s cause of death, leading to Hill’s new charge.

Both were booked into Harrison County jail, with Hill held without bond. Capital murder involves a killing during the commission of another felony, in this case, child abuse.

Police stated the investigation is ongoing, and further charges against Gibbs are possible.
