A 6-year-old child was killed, and three other people were injured in a crash on a rural Mississippi highway Friday.

WTVA in Tupelo reports that the crash happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 12, on Highway 278 in Pontotoc County.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports that the fatal accident happened when an SUV ran off the road and overturned.

A 6-year-old child died in the accident. The driver of the SUV was airlifted to a regional hospital. The current condition of the driver is unknown.

Two other children were taken by ambulance to a hospital and have since been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
