Just hours after he found out his wife was pregnant with their first, a Mississippi man suffered a tragic fall at work that doctors say will likely leave him paralyzed for the rest of his life.
For newlyweds Brianna and Luke Byrd, July 11 began with joyous news—they were expecting their first child.
However, their joy quickly turned to shock and panic when Luke was rushed to the hospital after falling nearly 15 feet off a ladder while working as a carpenter.
Luke was rushed to Forrest General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He underwent hours of surgery for a T12 spinal injury. The doctors said he would likely never walk again.
Despite this, the Byrds say they remain motivated by the news of their pregnancy.
Community members have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the extensive modifications that will be required for the Byrd home. Planned changes include building a wheelchair ramp, widening the doorways, making the bathroom accessible, etc.
“These expenses, coupled with the surgery and physical therapy, will require financial resources not available to the young newlyweds. Any contributions you could make would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Friends and family of Luke Byrd.” the GoFundMe page said.
