An inmate was found dead in his cell at a Mississippi Correctional facility — the third death at the facility in the month of July.
Authorities reported Friday that an inmate was found dead inside his cell at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility, located approximately 90 miles east of the state capital, Jackson.
Clarence Gillie, 59, was discovered unresponsive in his cell on Thursday, according to an official for Management and Training Corporation, the company that manages the facility.
Officials report that facility medical staff responded immediately, performing emergency medical procedures until local emergency medical services arrived. Soon after, Gillie was declared deceased.
Officials say they do not expect foul play in the incident but that an investigation into Gillie’s death is ongoing, with a cause pending the results of an autopsy.
A spokeswoman for the Mississippi Department of Corrections reported that Gillie was serving three sentences totaling 65 years. He was convicted of burglary in Coahoma County in 1987, escape in Sunflower County in 1988, and armed robbery in Bolivar County in 1989.
