A lightning strike is believed to have caused a large fire at a Mississippi oil facility over the weekend.

Wayne County first responders report a busy weekend after severe storms on Friday triggered significant emergencies. The Wayne County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) reported that lightning struck an oil production facility near U.S. 45 and County Farm Road, sparking a major fire.

Quick action from multiple stations of the Wayne County Volunteer Fire Department, along with the sheriff’s department and Waynesboro Police Department, helped prevent what could have been a tragic event. “People from the companies that own the well were amazed at how quickly first responders arrived, contained the fire, and kept it from reaching the well,” said Wayne County EMA Public Information Officer Paul Keane.

In addition to the fire, another lightning strike nearby caused a water outage affecting thousands of residents. The EMA acknowledged the outage in a Facebook post, noting the challenges first responders faced in protecting the community during the severe weather.
