A high-speed chase on Interstate 59 involving a motorcycle and a Jones County Sheriff’s deputy unfolded Wednesday morning, reaching speeds of over 100 mph.

The pursuit began near the 90-mile marker in Ellisville when the deputy attempted to stop a northbound Harley Davidson motorcycle. The rider, later identified as 43-year-old James Alton Berry III of Purvis, Mississippi, accelerated, sparking the chase.

The pursuit continued at high speeds until Berry reached the 16th Avenue off-ramp in Laurel, where officers from the Laurel Police Department were responding to a two-vehicle injury crash. Mistakenly believing that the police units were blocking the intersection to aid in his escape, Berry stopped his motorcycle. He was promptly taken into custody.
