Officials believe a man who was hauling a trailer reported stolen four years ago from Florida likely did not realize it had been taken.

Detectives from the Picayune Police Department’s Special Operations Division recovered the stolen trailer during a routine traffic stop on Thursday afternoon. The stop took place on Telly Road near South Haugh Avenue when officers pulled over a Chevy Tahoe towing a trailer for traffic violations.

Upon further investigation, detectives discovered that the trailer had been reported stolen from Bay County, Florida, in 2020. While it is not believed that the driver was aware of the theft, the investigation is ongoing.

“We commend the detectives who located this stolen property and are assisting in returning it to its rightful owner,” said Picayune Police Chief Joe Quave. “Our officers work diligently to address all matters of criminal activity and, when possible, assist with the location and return of property.”

The department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the trailer’s theft and the driver’s potential involvement.
