A former Mississippi alderman was arrested after being accused of defrauding taxpayers while being employed as an alderman.

State Auditor Shad White announced Thursday the arrest of Charles Roberts, a former city of Horn Lake Alderman, on charges of Fraudulent Statements and Representations. Roberts is accused of collecting unemployment benefits while still employed and failing to disclose his income.

The case has been turned over to the DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

District Attorney Matthew Barton emphasized the seriousness of the crime, stating, “Stealing from taxpayers is a serious offense, and we are committed to seeing this case through.”

If convicted, Roberts faces up to $10,000 in fines and a maximum of five years in prison.
