Three crew members killed after Kentucky medical helicopter crashes responding to emergency

Three crew members aboard a medical helicopter tragically lost their lives when it crashed near Owenton, Kentucky. The helicopter, identified as Air Evac 133, was responding to an emergency call around 6 p.m. Monday when the accident occurred.

The victims, Gale Alleman, Bethany Aicken, and James Welsh, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Kentucky State Police. They were based in Grant County and were en route to pick up a patient at the time of the crash.

The helicopter was a Bell 206, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Air Evac Lifeteam, the company that operated the helicopter, expressed deep condolences and said its immediate priority is supporting the families of the victims and its team members. “Critical incident stress management teams have been deployed to assist during this difficult time,” the company said.

FlightAware.com reported that the helicopter took off from Williamstown at 5:22 p.m. and was last tracked near Frankfort at 5:30 p.m. Witnesses dining on the patio of Amigos, a nearby restaurant, saw the helicopter collide with a tower before it crashed and caught fire.

The Owen County Fire and Rescue Department confirmed the crash happened near the restaurant, stating that federal investigators were called to the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said an investigator would arrive on Tuesday to begin a formal investigation.

The crash also caused a temporary power outage in the area, lasting about an hour, according to the Owen Electric Cooperative.
