Deadly crash on Mississippi highway claims one life, injures five

Authorities are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday evening on U.S. 49 North near Star Road in Rankin County.

According to a press release, Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene around 6:12 p.m. The crash involved a 2024 Hyundai Palisade and a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am.

The Hyundai was driven by 78-year-old John Woodward of Brandon, with three passengers: 72-year-old Ira Ott, 73-year-old Betty Ott, and 71-year-old Donna Woodward, all of Brandon. The Pontiac was driven by 21-year-old Gracie Blakeney of Taylorsville, with 36-year-old Ashley Holloman of Waynesboro as a passenger.

Authorities report that the Hyundai was traveling north on U.S. 49 when the Pontiac attempted to cross the highway. The two vehicles collided, resulting in severe damage.

All occupants of the Hyundai and the driver of the Pontiac were transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson with unspecified injuries. Tragically, Ashley Holloman, a passenger in the Pontiac, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
