Convicted murderer captured after escape from Mississippi prison, officials report

A convicted murderer who escaped a Mississippi prison on Tuesday was captured on Christmas Day and is back in custody.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) announced Wednesday afternoon that authorities captured the convicted murderer who escaped from a Greene County prison on Tuesday.

Escapee Drew Johnson is in custody. MDOC announced that authorities captured 33-year-old Drew Johnson near the South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI), where he escaped on Tuesday afternoon.

The inmate is serving a life sentence for a Rankin County murder.

Johnson, sentenced in February 2022, escaped from SMCI in Leakesville.
