A Mississippi addiction therapist is in jail, charged with the murder of his stepchild, a transgender woman found dead Thursday night.

Charles Garry Reifers, 76, of Lafayette County, was arrested on Thursday night and charged with the murder of his stepchild, Charlene Cook, 58. A Justice Court judge set Reifers’ bond at $1 million on Saturday.

Reifers, a retired addiction recovery therapist and the founding program director of the Oxford Treatment Center, was taken into custody without incident after deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home on the 100 block of Heights Drive late Thursday evening. Upon arrival, deputies found Cook, a transgender woman, dead at the scene.
