A powerful tornado, confirmed by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson as a high-end EF-2, struck Lamar and Marion counties in Mississippi early Monday morning, resulting in widespread damage across several communities.
The tornado is believed to have touched down around 6:30 a.m. on March 31, 2025, with the most significant destruction concentrated in the Pine Burr community and the southwest corner of Lamar County, near Baxterville.
Local emergency management agencies (EMAs) reported severe damage to homes and infrastructure, particularly in Lamar County. The Lamar County EMA issued reports of extensive damage along Johnson Road, McGraw Road, Luther Saucier Road, and Prosperous Bridge Road. Several homes, including two that appeared to be completely destroyed, were affected, particularly in the Johnson Road and McGraw Road areas.
Crews from local fire departments are working tirelessly to clear debris and check on residents, but authorities are urging the public to stay off the impacted roads. Lamar County Supervisor Terry Bass stated that crews are expected to be working through the week to clear the debris and ensure the safety of residents in the hardest-hit areas.
In Marion County, the Pine Burr community experienced structural damage and numerous downed trees. Emergency crews are on the ground to assess the full scope of the damage and begin recovery efforts. Fortunately, the Forrest County EMA reported no significant damage or road closures in their jurisdiction at this time.
As cleanup and recovery efforts continue, local officials are reminding residents to stay alert and follow emergency instructions to ensure their safety.
