A woman is in custody after authorities say she falsely reported a carjacking near Brandon.

According to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a call on Highway 18 near Mohr Road on Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m. The woman claimed that her vehicle had broken down and that two men stopped to assist her. After they got the car started, she alleged that the men carjacked her.

However, upon further investigation, deputies contacted the vehicle’s manufacturer and discovered that the car had been in California for an extended period. This evidence contradicted the woman’s account, leading to her arrest.
