Mississippi officials report more than 400 homes damaged by tornadoes last week

More than 400 homes across Mississippi were damaged last week as a series of tornadoes tore through the state, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

The National Weather Service confirmed at least 14 tornadoes touched down, including two powerful EF-3 tornadoes in Tate and Marshall counties. The outbreak also included five EF-2 tornadoes, six EF-1 tornadoes, and one EF-0 tornado. Storm surveys are still ongoing.


MEMA reported that in addition to the 414 damaged homes, 14 businesses and 20 farms were also affected. Of the homes impacted, 54 were completely destroyed, while 68 sustained major damage.

Emergency officials are also closely monitoring rising water levels in the Mississippi River and other rivers throughout the state, which could pose further risks to affected communities.

Several counties have submitted official damage reports to MEMA, detailing the extent of destruction:

  • Marshall County: 101 homes, 2 businesses, 1 injured
  • Union County: 72 homes, 4 businesses, 5 farms
  • Tate County: 49 homes, 1 farm, 2 injured
  • Jasper County: 29 homes, 4 farms, 1 death
  • Pontotoc County: 24 homes, 1 business, 5 farms, 1 injured
  • Forrest County: 32 homes, 4 businesses
  • Lafayette County: 17 homes
  • Benton County: 16 homes
  • Tippah County: 14 homes, 2 farms, 3 injured
  • Desoto County: 12 homes
  • Smith County: 11 homes
  • Alcorn County: 9 homes
  • Hinds County: 9 homes
  • Lowndes County: 6 homes
  • Tallahatchie County: 6 homes
  • Sunflower County: 4 homes, 1 business
  • Kemper County: 2 homes, 1 farm, 1 business
  • Tunica County: 2 farms
  • Bolivar County: 1 home, 1 business
