A Mississippi man was among three people killed after two boats collided during a Major League Fishing tournament on Smith Lake in northern Alabama Wednesday morning.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed that Jeffrey Little, 62, of Brandon, Mississippi, and John Clark, 44, of Cullman, Alabama, were thrown overboard during the crash, which occurred around 7:00 a.m. near the Miller Flats area of the lake, which is a popular boating destination. Both men were aboard a center console vessel at the time of the incident and later drowned. Their bodies were recovered by search crews later in the day.
A third victim, identified as Joey Broom, 58, was also killed in the crash. ALEA has not released further details about Broom’s role in the collision.
The crash happened during an official Major League Fishing (MLF) tournament, which was scheduled to continue through Thursday. Following the fatal incident, the tournament director told WHNT that the remainder of the competition has been cancelled out of respect for the victims and their families.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
