A 22-year-old man from Pinola died Saturday night following a police chase that began during an attempted drag racing event in Copiah County.

According to the Copiah County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to reports of drag racing around 11:16 p.m. but were unable to locate any vehicles in the area. A short time later, troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol spotted two vehicles—one of them a 2007 Dodge Charger—at Highway 51 and County Line Road appearing to prepare for a race.

Troopers say the driver of the Charger, identified as Jayden Bridges, took off, prompting a pursuit. Both Bridges and a pursuing trooper lost control of their vehicles during the chase.

Bridges was transported to Copiah County Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The MHP trooper involved in the crash was taken to a hospital in Jackson with non-life-threatening injuries.

Copiah County Sheriff Byron Swilley noted that deputies had been conducting routine checks in the area due to previous drag racing concerns.

The incident remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
