A Mississippi man has been arrested after allegedly attacking and killing his 62-year-old mother with a shovel.

According to the Tupelo Police Department, officers responded to a welfare check on April 29 in the Villages Subdivision off Coley Road. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a man at the scene and soon discovered the body of a deceased woman.

The victim was identified as 62-year-old Sherri Lynn Lazore. She had reportedly been attacked with a shovel, according to a report from the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.

The man at the scene, identified as 30-year-old Joshua D. Lazore, was taken into custody and transported to the Tupelo Police Department for questioning. He was later formally charged with one count of first-degree murder.

On April 30, Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Allen ordered Lazore to be held without bond. The case will be presented to the Lee County Grand Jury.

Authorities have not released additional details about the incident.
