Possible human remains were discovered in northwest Lincoln County by a deer hunter Saturday.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. Sat, Nov. 25, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a hunter had located possible human remains near a road leading into a wooded area on Wooley Trail.

Initial information indicated that no one had been to that location since about May 2023. Deputies responded to the scene and then requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, the Mississippi Crime Lab response team and the Lincoln County Coroner’s Office, according to Sheriff Steve Rushing.

The remains were recovered by the crime lab and sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office for further testing. Due to the condition of the remains no further description as to sex, race, or how long they had been at the scene is available without further testing by the state lab.
