The snow, sleet, and freezing rain may have ended several hours ago, but there are plenty of dangerous highways, roads, and bridges across the Magnolia State after our winter storm.
Any water remaining on the roadways will freeze again, especially now with the sun setting. These patches on roads is often referred to as “black ice” because the color blends in with the roadway surface.
According to the Mississippi Department of Transportation, the following 68 out of 84 counties are reporting at least patches of ice on roads and bridges: Adams, Alcorn, Amite, Attala, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Claiborne, Clay, Coahoma, Copiah, Covington, DeSoto, Franklin, Grenada, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Itawamba, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Kemper, Lafayette, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Leake, Lee, Leflore, Lincoln, Lowndes, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Monroe, Montgomery, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Panola, Pike, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Rankin, Scott, Sharkey, Simpson, Smith, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Walthall, Warren, Washington, Webster, Wilkinson, Winston, Yalobusha, and Yazoo.
“Our crews are continuing to treat and clear routes, but we don’t advise travel unless absolutely necessary,” a statement from MDOT reads. “Stay at home if you can and stay safe!”
