A Mississippi man who reportedly shot at police has been arrested after a nearly four-hour manhunt Thursday.

Brookhaven Police Chief Kenny Collins told the Brookhaven Daily Leader that officers from his department had attempted to approach Kriston Ramsey at Jackson Square Apartments on North Jackson Street, initiating a struggle over a rifle that resulted in gunfire.

“He was wanted on a felony warrant for stealing a vehicle,” Collins disclosed. Ramsey was believed to have sought refuge in the nearby woods, possibly injured from the altercation.

Ramsey eluded authorities until a sheriff’s deputy managed to detain him after a three-and-a-half-hour manhunt.

According to Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing, no officers were injured during the initial confrontation and subsequent manhunt.

Following his arrest, Ramsey was promptly transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the initial confrontation.

The incident prompted heightened security measures, with a notable police presence reported at Mamie Martin Elementary School. Superintendent Roderick Henderson assured the community that the school’s operations remained unaffected, emphasizing that the law enforcement presence was purely precautionary.

While the Mississippi Highway Patrol initially responded to assist, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office ultimately managed the situation, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. Chief Collins extended gratitude to all involved agencies for their support during the intense ordeal.
