A body found floating in the Pearl River north of Monticello Saturday has been confirmed to be of a missing Jackson man.
Officials say the body is that of Dau Mabil, a 33-year-old Belhaven man last seen in March.
Lawrence County Sheriff Ryan Everett said the autopsy confirmed the identification but did not reveal any foul play.
Everett said an official determination may be made at a later date pending further testing.
“People have been looking for him, but he’s not alive,” said Mabil’s brother, Bul Garang Mabil. “He’s not. He’s not alive. I believe the body that was found is my brother, Dau. Let the public know.”
Attorneys said evidence exists, including video, that the last place Mabil was seen alive was on the Museum Trail in Jackson, where attorney Lisa Ross said he fought for his life. Ross represents Mabil’s brother and son.
“We want to make sure that whoever harmed Dau is brought to justice,” said Ross.
U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson has called on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate.
Anyone with information is asked to report it to law enforcement.
