The remains of a body found in the Mississippi woods by a hunter last November have been identified, Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said.
He added the family was notified of the identification Thursday.
The Brookhaven Daily Leader reports that the Mississippi State Crime Lab determined the remains found in Caseyville were of Tyler Advani, a missing Harrison County man. The remains were identified through DNA testing at the Scales Biological Lab. He was last reported to be in Brookhaven in August 2023 and was 30 years old at the time.
“This is now an active death investigation. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation are involved with assisting us,” Rushing said. “We have a couple leads that we are working on.”
Rushing said the FBI is involved due to the remains being found near the boundary line of the Homochitto National Forest. Advani’s remains were found off of Wooley Trail NW in Lincoln County.
Due to the state of the remains when they were discovered, no general age, sex or possible cause of death could be given.
“We at least know who it is and the family was notified. We have an ID on the body but we still do not know a cause of death,” Rushing said.
