A former Mississippi hotel owner was arrested on tax evasion and embezzlement charges.
Ryan Patrick Mullen, a former businessman from Natchez, is in custody after being indicted by an Adams County Grand Jury on charges of tax evasion and embezzlement. Mullen, 43, was already sentenced in March to over 13 years in federal prison for fraud convictions related to the purchase of The Briars antebellum home and two hotels in Natchez.
Mullen was arrested Monday morning at his residence on 12 Roberts Road in Jayess by an Adams County Sheriff’s deputy and U.S. Marshals. The arrest followed a May 13 indictment by the Grand Jury, which includes three counts of tax evasion and one count of embezzlement.
The indictment details Mullen’s attempts to evade state taxes: $113,471.57 in imposed taxes, $33,554 in occupancy tax liability, and $6,080 in withholding tax liability, all of which he failed to pay to the State of Mississippi.
In addition to the state charges, Mullen was convicted in the Eastern District Court in New Orleans on March 20 for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. Mullen was found guilty of defrauding Keesler Federal Credit Union to purchase The Briars antebellum home in Natchez. He was found guilty of fraudulently obtaining loans from Red Oak Capital to purchase Hotel Vue and Super 8 Motel in Natchez.
Further, Mullen was found guilty of receiving loans for properties greater than what was paid for their purchase and used approximately $1.3 million to buy a number of luxury cars.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten confirmed that Mullen would remain in county custody until he begins his federal prison sentence. After completing his federal term, Mullen will return to Adams County to face the state charges.
