Former Mississippi high school bookkeeper arrested, accused of using activity funds for personal gain

A former bookkeeper at a Mississippi high school has been charged with embezzlement.

State Auditor Shad White announced that Memory Smith, previously employed at Quitman High School, was arrested by special agents from his office. Smith is accused of misappropriating cash from the school’s activity fund for personal use.

“We appreciate our investigators for uncovering this fraud,” said White. “Our office maintains a zero-tolerance policy for fraud, and we will continue working to ensure that tax dollars are spent appropriately.”

If convicted, Smith faces up to $5,000 in fines and a potential 20-year prison sentence.
