Two people were killed — including a Mississippi police officer — during a shootout at a Mississippi traffic checkpoint Thursday, according to a news release from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Two other police officers were reportedly injured in the incident.
MBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Summit Police Department and McComb Police Department that occurred on August 8th, 2024.
Officers with the Summit Police Department were working a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue when a car approached and a passenger subject presented a weapon towards the officers, striking one Summit police officer causing fatal injuries.
Two additional McComb police officers arrived in the area and encountered the subject engaging in an exchange of gunfire. Both officers received non-life-threatening injuries in the exchange and the subject received fatal injuries. This information is preliminary and subject to change.
Summit Police Department officer Troy Floyd, who ran for Lincoln County Sheriff in 2023, was the officer killed, according to McComb news outlet The Enterprise-Journal.
MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
