A mass shooting claimed the lives of four people and injured 18 others late Saturday night in Birmingham’s bustling Five Points South entertainment district. According to police, many of the victims were caught in the crossfire as gunfire erupted in the popular nightlife area.
The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m., Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald reported. When officers arrived, they found two men and a woman fatally wounded on the sidewalk. A fourth victim, another man, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that “multiple suspects fired upon a large group of people who were outside in a public area,” Fitzgerald stated in an early Sunday update. The shooting does not appear to be random, as police believe it stemmed from an isolated incident involving multiple individuals, with bystanders tragically caught in the crossfire.
In the hours following the attack, 18 additional victims arrived at area hospitals, some suffering life-threatening injuries. As of Sunday morning, police had not made any arrests and are urging the public to provide information that could assist in their investigation.
