Body found inside burned car identified as Mississippi man missing since mid-August

A body found inside a burned car has been identified as that of a Mississippi man who had been missing since mid-August.

Officials with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office report that remains found on Sept. 1 have been positively identified through DNA analysis as those of Gregory Varnado.

The remains were recovered after a property owner discovered a burned vehicle on his property.

Results of the DNA analysis and comparison by the Mississippi Medical Examiner’s Office were completed on Sept. 24. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Varnado’s cause of death and manner of death to be undetermined at this time.

Varnado had been missing since August 15, and a Silver Alert was issued for him.
