Mississippi officials are investigating after a deer hunter discovered human remains on a private property.

Officials with the Leake County report that the remains were found near Midway Road on Sunday, October 20.

According to Sheriff Randy Atkinson, deputies responded to the scene and found a mostly intact human body. Due to the level of decomposition, they were unable to identify the remains at the time.

The Leake County Coroner’s Office has collected the body, which will be sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination and identification.

Authorities have classified the case as a death investigation, and more details are expected following the medical examination.
