Authorities are investigating two separate shootings that occurred in Natxchez over the weekend, including one that left a 61-year-old man dead. The shootings, which took place on Sunday and Monday, have raised concerns in the community, though police say they appear unrelated.

On Sunday, at approximately 12:30 a.m., a woman was injured in a shooting while sitting in a parked car with a man on St. Catherine Street near Holy Family Catholic Church. Two individuals approached the vehicle and opened fire, striking the woman in the leg and buttocks. The man was unharmed. The woman remains hospitalized in Jackson, and Natchez Police Chief Cal Green stated that police will interview her once she is able.

Then, on Monday, a fatal shooting occurred at 841 Martin Luther King Jr. Street around 2 p.m. James Mitchell, 61, was found dead from a single gunshot wound to the head while on his screened-in porch. Police have not yet determined whether the shot was fired from inside or outside the home. Chief Green said that Mitchell, described as a quiet, happy person with no known enemies, had not been involved in any altercations before the shooting. No suspects have been identified in either incident.

The Natchez Democrat newspaper reported about the shootings and a press conference by Adams County District Attorney Tim Cotton, condemning the violence that struck the community.

“No one should have to fear for their life while simply enjoying their later years, painting a house at 2 p.m.,” Cotton said, referring to Mitchell’s tragic death. “We need the community’s help to solve these crimes.”

He urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that the public can contact Crime Stoppers at 888-442-5001 or his office directly if they have concerns about their safety.

While it’s unusual to have back-to-back shootings, Chief Green said the two incidents appear unrelated, and there is currently no evidence to suggest gang violence is involved. Both investigations are ongoing, and authorities are seeking any leads or surveillance footage that could help solve the cases.

Cotton also addressed growing frustrations within the community, urging people to refrain from speculating until the facts are clear. “We don’t have the facts yet, but we are working hard to get them,” he said. “For those who think they’re above the law, make no mistake, we know who you are, and we’re coming for you.”

Both police and the district attorney’s office continue their investigations, hoping to bring those responsible to justice.
