A three-year-old child died after a two-vehicle wreck involving a garbage truck.

Officials with the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) said a 2020 Western-Star Sanitation Truck was stationary on the north side of Highway 45 in Wayne County when it was hit by a 2012 Dodge Ram traveling north on the highway.

The crash occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 12.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, 32-year-old Derrick K. Deese, of Waynesboro, was injured and transported to a local hospital. A three-year-old passenger of the Dodge Ram received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

No other injuries were reported. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by MHP.
