A 20-year-old man is facing several charges after police say he fell asleep behind the wheel at a busy intersection, leading to a dramatic response from law enforcement.

WREG in Memphis reports that Jermel James Moore has been charged with possession of a controlled substance enhanced by a firearm, possession of paraphernalia, obstructing traffic, and open container and window tint violations following the incident.

The Olive Branch Police Department (OBPD) received a welfare concern call at 8:06 p.m. on Saturday about a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Highway 302 and Craft Road.

When officers arrived, they had difficulty seeing inside the vehicle due to the dark window tint. Using a flashlight, officers noticed slight movement from the driver and detected a strong odor of marijuana. A rifle was also spotted on the driver’s lap.

Taking precautions, officers placed stop sticks beneath the vehicle and retreated to a safe position while awaiting backup. Additional officers from OBPD and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department arrived to assist.

Despite repeated attempts to communicate with the driver using a PA system, the vehicle began to move forward, crossing the intersection before coming to a stop on Craft Road.

Officers escalated their response by breaking the vehicle’s back glass with a beanbag round, gaining a clearer view. They discovered the driver was asleep and confirmed the presence of alcohol and the rifle inside the vehicle.

The tense situation, which lasted for hours, was partially captured on Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) cameras. In one sequence, a police-deployed drone entered the vehicle through a broken window, startling Moore, who then drove into the parking lot of a nearby Walgreens.

Moore was detained without further incident and taken into custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 30.
