Mississippi traffic stop leads to discovery of drugs, firearms and illegal deer

A routine traffic stop on Highway 45 on December 18 resulted in the arrest of Kevin Franklin Michael, 55, of Booneville, after authorities discovered an illegal deer and firearms in his possession.

Prentiss County Deputy Kolby Knight conducted the stop and contacted Fish and Game Officers Larry Rowan and Tim Gholson, who determined that Michael was in violation of hunting regulations. The discovery led to misdemeanor charges and a felony Possession of a Weapon by a Felon charge.

The investigation intensified the following day when Investigator Aaron Stolz executed a search warrant at Michael’s residence. During the search, authorities seized five additional firearms and approximately 30 pounds of marijuana, classified as a Schedule I controlled substance.

Michael now faces several charges, including Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Trafficking of a Controlled Substance Enhanced with a Firearm, and Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance. As a habitual offender, Michael’s charges carry enhanced penalties.

Justice Court Judge Ray Hall set Michael’s bond at $200,000. The case, which will be presented to the Prentiss County Grand Jury, is being led by Investigator Stolz and North Mississippi Narcotics Investigator Grady Smith.

Authorities praised the collaborative effort among law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in combating illegal activities in the region.
