Mississippi DA warns of recent telephone scam with false jury duty claims

One Mississippi District Attorney is alerting residents about a telephone scam targeting local citizens with false claims related to jury duty.

District Attorney Bubba Bramlett warned residents that scammers are impersonating law enforcement officers, court officials, or district attorney staff. The fraudulent callers tell victims they missed a jury duty summons and could face contempt of court charges or even an arrest warrant.

The scammers then demand money to resolve the issue, instructing victims to provide bank account information or send payments via cash apps, PayPal, Venmo, or wire transfer. In some cases, victims are tricked into divulging sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, and credit or debit card details.

“Even though these calls may appear to come from a local law enforcement number, no officer, judge, or court official will ever demand payment or come to your home to collect money,” warned Bramlett. “These scammers use real names and seem to have accurate personal information, but do not fall victim.”

The DA’s office emphasized that courts primarily communicate about jury duty through postal mail, not by phone or email. Legitimate court-related calls are only made during regular business hours.

Residents are urged to remain cautious and to avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown callers. “Do not fall victim to this scam or any other scheme where someone you do not know requests sensitive information,” the DA’s office stated.

Anyone receiving suspicious calls is encouraged to report them to local authorities.
