New details have been released in the death of 6-year-old Gracelynn Vick, who was found dead over the weekend after a search on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
During a press conference held Tuesday, Harrison County Sheriff Matt Haley described the incident as a “tragic accident.” According to Sheriff Haley, Gracelynn was playing outside when she climbed into a 58-gallon barrel located on the family’s property and closed the lid from the inside. She became trapped, and authorities believe this led to her death.
“It was similar to being trapped in a hot car,” Haley said, explaining the dangerous conditions inside the sealed container.
Gracelynn was reported missing around noon on the day of the incident. Her family told deputies she had gone out to play in the front yard and disappeared shortly afterward. A large-scale search was launched involving Harrison County deputies, ATVs, a helicopter, and ground teams. Acadian Ambulance, Harrison County Fire, and Gulf Coast Rescue also assisted in the effort.
Her body was later discovered inside the barrel on the property.
Sheriff Haley thanked the numerous agencies and community members who assisted in the search. The investigation remains ongoing, but no foul play is suspected at this time.
