After nearly four decades, an arrest has been made in the 1986 abduction and murder of 17-year-old Shondra May, a case that has long remained unsolved in Scott County.

Authorities arrested 63-year-old Rubin Weeks on Tuesday at an RV park in Madison County. He has been charged with kidnapping, rape, and murder in connection to May’s death.

May disappeared in February 1986 while driving home from her job. Her car was found abandoned just short of her driveway in Forest. Three weeks later—on what would have been her 18th birthday—her body was discovered in a creek near Bolton, bound with tape.

Officials say Weeks showed little reaction when taken into custody, though he requested a wheelchair during the arrest. Investigators say he had been seen fishing the day before.

The arrest follows years of renewed efforts by investigators, who recently located multiple witnesses with direct knowledge of the crime. Authorities credit their persistence, along with cooperation from the community, for helping the case come together after so many years.

Weeks had previously been convicted in Missouri in 1991 for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a motel clerk, a crime that bore similarities to May’s case. Although he was questioned at the time, there was not enough evidence to charge him—until now.

Family members of Shondra May expressed relief that progress has finally been made, even as they continue to cope with the loss.

Weeks is expected to appear in court Thursday as the case moves forward.
