U.S. Senator Thad Cochran is resigning April 1 due to “health problems,” according to the Associated Press.
Cochran, 80, said in a statement he intends to fulfill his responsibilities, both to Mississippi and the Senate, through the 2018 appropriations cycle.
Cochran was elected in 1978. Gov. Phil Bryant will appoint an interim replacement before a special election is held to fill the remainder of his term.
