A homeowner letting in her dog for the night Wednesday was shot at by someone who likely had just stolen the gun from her vehicle, authorities said.
Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said the woman — who lives on Lake Lincoln Road — had let her dog out for a while, but when she opened the front door about 11:30 p.m. to bring the pooch back in, she noticed something amiss in her driveway.
“She got up to let her dog in, noticed the door to the truck standing open, then she saw someone running toward the roadway,” he said.
The woman told deputies the subject shot toward her four times as the individual jumped into the back seat of a sedan waiting on the road at the end of her driveway.
Rushing said a handgun was the only item taken from the vehicle.
Deputies found what appeared to be two bullet holes in the house, he said. Rushing is not sure if the gun used to shoot at the homeowner was the gun stolen from the truck.
He said the witness did not get a good look at the subject or the color, make and model of the car.
Rushing urges homeowners to lock their vehicles at all times, even when at home. He said several times a year, groups of people — likely not from Lincoln County — will travel around looking for “targets” such as vehicles with unlocked doors.
