A 4-year-old Mississippi girl was killed over the Memorial Day weekend when the car in which she was riding left the road and collided with a culvert.

Tekerra Moore of Horn Lake, Mississippi, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on Louisiana 183, just north of Holly Ridge, Louisiana.

Louisiana State Troopers say the girl was not restrained with a seatbelt or car seat when the accident occurred.

The driver of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala, Darren Moore also of Horn Lake, was wearing a seat belt, troopers reported. He was transported by helicopter to a Jackson, Mississippi, hospital for his injuries.

Trooper say they do not yet know why the car left the roadway. As a routine part of the investigation, toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis, troopers reported. It was not immediately clear how Darren Moore and Tekerra Moore might be related.

“While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained,” a state police spokesman said. “Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.”
